UP unveils Degrees Delivered initiative

The University of Pretoria has unveiled a R50 million fundraising campaign to help qualifying graduates overcome historical student debt.

The Degrees Delivered initiative seeks to settle outstanding debt for graduates who have successfully completed all academic requirements but are unable to collect their certificates due to unpaid fees.

The campaign forms part of the university's Thrive UP 2038 strategy, which seeks to expand access to opportunities while creating lasting social impact.

The University of Pretoria's Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Francis Petersen, says the campaign was created to address what he described as a painful but common reality that is faced by many graduates.
The Degrees Delivered initiative will run until 2028.

Final call for 2026 National Arts and Culture Awards nominations

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has issued a final call for nominations for the 2026 National Arts and Culture Awards.

The awards honour achievements across the arts, culture and heritage sectors. Artists, cultural institutions, community organisations, industry bodies and members of the public have until 11:59 pm on Sunday the 19th of July to submit nominations.

The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie says the country is home to exceptional creative talent and says deserving artists can only be recognised if they are nominated.

The Minister encouraged South African citizens to put forward the names of performers, writers, filmmakers, cultural practitioners and other creatives whose work has made a meaningful impact.

Submissions can be completed and submitted via the official National Arts and Culture Awards Portal.

SA learners to compete at World Spelling Bee in Shanghai

Six South African learners are set to represent the country at the inaugural Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, in China.

The learners will compete against young spellers from more than 20 countries.

The achievement follows an outstanding year for South African spelling, where Team South Africa was crowned the African Spelling Bee Champions at the continental championships in Zimbabwe.

The team’s participation highlights the continent's growing presence in global literacy and education initiatives.

Cape Town unveils battery-electric MyCiTi bus

The City of Cape Town's public transport network is embracing cleaner mobility with the introduction of its first battery-electric MyCiTi bus.

The prototype bus, will be tested on a range of city routes, including steep inclines and busy commuter corridors, as part of a pilot programme to test how the vehicle performs under local driving conditions, before a planned rollout of the electric fleet in 2027.

The City, says the pilot marks a significant milestone for the MyCiTi service, which has been operating for 16 years.

According to the City, electric buses could reduce operating costs by up to 70% compared with conventional vehicles, while lowering emissions and improving the long-term resilience of Cape Town's public transport system.
