Partial Solar Eclipse Visible Across South Africa
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A partial solar eclipse will be visible across parts of South Africa this afternoon as the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, making it appear as though a small “bite” has been taken out of the Sun.
The eclipse begins at 14:01 SAST, reaches its peak at 14:43, and ends at 15:24, lasting just over an hour. Residents are advised not to look directly at the Sun without ISO-approved eclipse glasses or a proper solar filter, as ordinary sunglasses are not safe.
For those without glasses, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) recommends safe viewing through a homemade pinhole or cereal-box projector, which projects the Sun’s image onto white paper. SANSA will also livestream the event on its YouTube channel using a solar telescope.
