Young Humpback Freed After Rope Rescue off Cape Recife
Story 2
A 9-metre juvenile humpback whale has been rescued and returned to the ocean after becoming tangled in fishing rope about 33 kilometres off Cape Recife.
Volunteers from the SA Whale Disentanglement Network and the NSRI responded after a local fishing crew called for help. Two rescue craft carried cutting gear and worked with the fishermen to carefully remove the rope from the whale’s tail.
After the operation, the whale rested briefly before swimming away, free and unharmed. Entanglements like this are common and can be life-threatening, highlighting the importance of SAWDN’s work.
The network brings together trained volunteers, conservationists, government departments, and the fishing community to protect whales along South Africa’s coastline.
