Soweto Special Needs School Thrives Through Food Garden Education
Story 1
Learners at the Philip Kushlick School in Diepkloof are gaining skills and confidence through a thriving food garden.
The project is part of the EduPlant programme, a national initiative run by Food and Trees for Africa to boost food security and nutrition in schools.
The garden gives learners with special needs hands-on experience in growing food while improving their health and supporting classroom learning.
Younger pupils benefit through therapy and sensory activities, while older learners develop skills in sustainability and agriculture that can open career opportunities.
Parents are also inspired to start gardens at home, extending the impact into the wider community. Supported by Tiger Brands and the Gauteng Agriculture Department, the project is helping build resilience, purpose and healthier futures for the learners.
