Wits brings clean water to informal settlements

Wits University and Johannesburg Water have teamed up to provide a sustainable groundwater supply to informal settlements in Region G.
The project uses advanced hydrogeological science to deliver a reliable water system connected directly to households.
Once completed, it will supply up to 225 litres of clean water per person daily to more than 2,600 residents. The system is designed to be durable, easy to maintain, and resilient during power or pump failures.
Set to be fully operational by December 2025, the initiative highlights how local research and innovation can bring lasting change to Johannesburg’s communities.

Members pay a cooperative fee based on income and work a three-hour shift every four weeks.
This model allows the store to operate with minimal profit margins.
Most products are organic, regional, and low in packaging. The project aims to make good, healthy food affordable for everyone and invites the public to come for a trial shopping visit.
