TUT Students Innovate to Curb Dropout Rates

A group of students from the Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Information and Communication Technology has created an app aimed at tackling high university dropout rates.
Their prototype, called EduConnect, links students with peer tutors who have excelled in their subjects, offering affordable academic support.
The idea was developed for the EDHE-ABSA Innovation Challenge 2025.
The team hopes the app will help students succeed while empowering tutors to earn income and strengthen their skills.

South Africa to Roll Out Long-Acting HIV Prevention Drug in 2026

South Africa plans to introduce Lenacapavir in April 2026 as a long-acting HIV prevention option.
The injectable drug requires just two doses a year, offering six months of protection, and will initially be available to around 500,000 people with support from the Global Fund and NACOSA.
Approval from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority is expected by the end of October 2025. Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says the drug is a major step in combating HIV but cautions that initial supplies will be limited.
Efforts are underway to train healthcare workers and prepare communities for the rollout to ensure effective access and use.
