Low Cost Refill Store Expands Access to Affordable Groceries
Story 3
A South African retail concept offering groceries and household essentials at significantly lower prices than traditional supermarkets is gaining popularity in local communities.
SKUBU, launched in Diepsloot in Johannesburg last year, allows customers to bring their own containers and buy products such as maize meal, rice, sugar, cooking oil and detergents in the exact quantities they can afford. By using refill stations and reducing packaging costs, the company says it can offer products at substantially lower prices.
The concept has attracted thousands of shoppers and is now exploring expansion through smaller container based stores that can be placed closer to communities.

Former Fisherman Leads Major Ocean Cleanup Effort in Canada
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A Canadian diver is making a difference in marine conservation by leading efforts to remove waste from harbours and coastal areas.
Sean Bath, who once worked as a fisherman, now heads the Clean Harbours Initiative, which organises diving missions to collect discarded fishing gear and other debris from the ocean floor. Since launching the project in 2018, his team has removed large volumes of waste, including nets, lines and other marine litter known to harm sea life.
The initiative has expanded into beach clean ups when diving conditions are unsafe, allowing teams to collect significant amounts of plastic waste while using fewer resources.
Bath says increased public support following a documentary about his work has helped sustain and grow the project.
