New bill gives foster children more choice
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A new bill in Washington, DC could give children in foster care the opportunity to choose the families they want to live with, while keeping their legal connection to their birth parents.
The SOUL Act was developed by current and former foster youth, working with the Children's Law Center and the Family and Youth Initiative to give young people a greater voice in decisions about their future.
The bill has already been approved by the Washington, DC City Council and signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser. It is now awaiting a mandatory review by the US Congress before it is expected to take effect in September.
SOUL Act member and foster youth advocate Sierra says she is hopeful for the future.
