These organisations tackle critical issues like unemployment, food relief, and skills development for women with disabilities.
It’s all part of Michelin’s mission to create a better way forward for South African communities.

Chikunga Urges G20 to Tackle Barriers Holding Women Back

South Africa’s Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, is calling on the G20 to address deep-rooted barriers that continue to hold women back.
Speaking at the G20 Women Empowerment Working Group, she outlined South Africa’s focus on improving financial inclusion, recognising the value of unpaid care work, and strengthening the fight against gender-based violence.
Her department is developing policies to support carers and urging financial institutions to create more inclusive products.
Chikunga also called for a global, coordinated response to gender-based violence, stressing the need for urgent action.

UJ Scientist Honoured as National Geographic Explorer for Groundbreaking Work

Dr Tebogo Makhubela, a geologist and academic at the University of Johannesburg, was recently named a National Geographic Explorer, joining only 15 global recipients of the prestigious 2025 Wayfinder Award.
The honour recognises his leadership in science and provides a grant to support his research and postgraduate students. Makhubela’s journey began in Chiawelo, Soweto, where a high school trip sparked his passion for geology.
Despite financial challenges and long daily commutes, he remained determined to succeed.
He hopes this recognition will help open doors for future scientists and encourage more young people to follow their passion for research.
