Neema Foundation Marks 10th Silent Walk

The Neema Foundation for the Deaf has held its 10th annual Silent Walk/Run, with participants completing a 5km route without sound.
The event on Monday aimed to raise awareness of the barriers faced by deaf and hard-of-hearing people and support access to education, skills and opportunities.
The foundation also uses the annual event to promote awareness of South African Sign Language and inclusion.
Neema Deaf Coordinator, Lerato Maake Ka Mncube is also using her own experience to raise awareness of the Deaf community and highlight their experiences through a play she directs.

Westville Learners Host Mental Health Run

Learners at Westville Girls’ High School in Durban have brought the community together for a mental health fun run and walk.
More than 400 people took part in the event at Westville Athletic Club, which was organised by the school’s Transformation and Diversity Mental Health Subcommittee.
The event formed part of Mental Health Awareness Month and focused on mental health and suicide prevention.
The learner-led initiative also received support from the Westville community, local organisations and sponsors.

Boots Drive Helps Young Rugby Players

Boots for the Boys & Girls is collecting used school rugby boots to give to young players who need equipment to play.
The Eastern Cape initiative will launch its first collection box at St Andrew’s College in Makhanda on 18-September.
It was started after organisers saw young players in KwaNobuhle playing rugby without proper boots and protective equipment.
The campaign plans to involve more schools across the Eastern Cape.
