South Africa Opens New PET Recycling Plant, Boosting Circular Economy
Story 3
While global talks on a plastics pollution treaty have stalled, South Africa is pressing ahead with its recycling efforts.
The country has opened a new PET bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in Cape Town, the first of its kind in the Western Cape.
The Extrupet facility will add 15 000 tonnes of recycled plastic to the market each year, boosting the country’s circular economy.
Environment Minister Dion George said the project shows how policy and industry partnerships can turn waste into economic opportunity.
With more local facilities and rising recycling targets, South Africa continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable plastic management.
