Sandown Residents Rally to Clean Sandspruit River Greenbelt
Story 1
Hundreds of volunteers joined residents and local councillors on Sunday to clear the Sandspruit River greenbelt, collecting around 300 bags of waste.
The clean-up follows the recent departure of informal recyclers who had been operating in the area.
Residents are now working to transform the neglected space into a safe, usable park. Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford and 91 councillor Andrew Stewart praised the efforts, saying community involvement is key to maintaining green spaces.
Volunteer group Aseza WAO, from the World Mission Society Church of God, led the clean-up, encouraging locals to take ownership of the environment for the benefit of future generations

Karabo Poppy illustrates first children’s book
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Acclaimed South African illustrator and street artist Karabo Poppy Moletsane has stepped into children’s literature for the first time, illustrating a new picture book written by spoken word poet Harold Green III.
The book, Hugged by the Night, is described as a soothing bedtime story that also celebrates the beauty and strength of Black identity.
Moletsane, known for her bold visual style and collaborations with brands like Nike and KFC, says she was drawn to the project because it offered a chance to create a children’s book unlike any she had done before.
She says the story imagines the night as a comforting, protective presence, inspired by memories of being hugged by strong women in her family
