NMCH staff unite for World Kidney Day awareness walk
Story 1
Staff from the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg came together for a World Kidney Day awareness walk to support children living with kidney disease.
The event honoured young patients and raised awareness of conditions that often go undetected until advanced stages.
Participants observed a moment of silence for children who have passed and celebrated the resilience of those receiving care at NMCH’s paediatric dialysis unit, one of the largest in the country with 12 beds.
Despite rainy weather, doctors, nurses, and support teams marched to advocate for kidney health and a future where every child has access to lifesaving treatments.

Karabo Poppy illustrates first children’s book
Story 2
Acclaimed South African illustrator and street artist Karabo Poppy Moletsane has stepped into children’s literature for the first time, illustrating a new picture book written by spoken word poet Harold Green III.
The book, Hugged by the Night, is described as a soothing bedtime story that also celebrates the beauty and strength of Black identity.
Moletsane, known for her bold visual style and collaborations with brands like Nike and KFC, says she was drawn to the project because it offered a chance to create a children’s book unlike any she had done before.
She says the story imagines the night as a comforting, protective presence, inspired by memories of being hugged by strong women in her family.
