As South Africa mark the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, the nation reflects on the student-led protest that became a turning point in the fight against apartheid. What began as a peaceful demonstration against the Bantu Education system and the forced use of Afrikaans in schools grew into a powerful resistance movement after students were met with police violence. The events of June 16 sparked nationwide opposition to apartheid, drew global attention to the struggle and helped pave the way for South Africa's democracy in 1994. Today, Youth Day honours the young people who sacrificed their lives for freedom, with many landmarks from the uprising still standing as symbols of courage and resilience.
