UJ staff and students support Kensington soup kitchen

Staff and students from the University of Johannesburg's Complementary Medicine Department volunteered at a soup kitchen in Kensington, Johannesburg, where they helped prepare vegetable soup and hundreds of peanut butter sandwiches for people experiencing food insecurity.
The initiative formed part of the university's Nelson Mandela Day activities and supported a community programme that provides warm meals and about 650 sandwiches to around 250 people in the Johannesburg inner city.

Limpopo learners shine at global robotics competition

Two school robotics teams from Seshego in Limpopo have made South Africa proud after competing against teams from 50 countries at the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Grand Finale in Geneva, Switzerland.
Mashupye Tladi Primary School's Robo-Kidz team and Bokamoso Secondary School's Roborise team qualified through local, provincial and national rounds before showcasing their innovation in designing robots to tackle food security and farming challenges.
The Department of Basic Education praised the learners, saying their success demonstrates the growing impact of coding and robotics education in South Africa.

Birthday outreach brings hope to Thokoza learners

Community member Nondumiso Mbangula celebrated her birthday by giving back to learners at Foundation of Life Academy in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, instead of hosting a traditional party.
She donated meals, refreshments, gifts and financial support to the school, while spending time with the children.
The outreach helped the academy meet immediate needs and created a memorable day filled with joy and encouragement for the learners.

Restaurant owner returns R215 000 found in old toolbox

A restaurant owner in Myrtle Beach in the United States is being praised for his honesty after returning the equivalent of more than R215 000 that he found hidden inside an old toolbox.
Sak Yiengjuntuek discovered about 12 000 US dollars in a sunglasses case while clearing out equipment left behind by the previous owner of his restaurant. After realising the cash did not belong to him, he tracked down the former owner and returned every cent.
The former owner later told Sak he is currently battling health issues, meaning the money could not have come at a better time. Sak Yiengjuntuek says returning the money was simply the right thing to do. *
