Millions of learners still lack school desks

MiDesk Global is calling for more investment in school desks after estimating that 2.4 million South African learners do not have access to proper desks.
The social enterprise says basic classroom infrastructure is needed to improve literacy and prepare young people for future employment.
The call was made during World Youth Skills Day, as MiDesk highlighted that more than 95 million children across Africa attend school without proper desks or chairs.
MiDesk is urging government, businesses and education stakeholders to support efforts to provide learning spaces for learners.

Joburg launches programme for gig entrepreneurs

The City of Johannesburg's Department of Economic Development has launched a four-week JIX LAUNCHPAD programme to help young gig economy entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
The programme will train Johannesburg residents aged 18 to 35 through workshops, mentoring and virtual support delivered by the Wits Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct.
Participants will develop business plans, marketing tools and funding pitches before presenting their ideas to potential funders at a Demo Day.
Priority will be given to women-owned businesses, township enterprises and applicants with disabilities.

Kruger ranks among world's best birdwatching destinations

A study by AllClear Travel Insurance has ranked South Africa’s Kruger National Park as the world’s 10th-best birdwatching destination.
The study assessed 115 birdwatching locations across six continents using factors including bird species numbers, climate, access, and visitor costs.
Kruger was one of four African destinations included in the global rankings.
