UJ Choir concert gives young singers a chance to shine

The University of Johannesburg Choir will bring together young choristers from local schools for its Voices of Tomorrow concert on 1 August at the UJ Arts Centre in Auckland Park.
The collaborative performance will give school choirs the opportunity to perform alongside the university choir while experiencing a professional theatre environment that encourages creativity, confidence and artistic growth.
The initiative aims to inspire the next generation of singers and strengthen Johannesburg's vibrant choral community.

Shoprite training boosts early learning in the Western Cape

Ten Early Childhood Development centres in the Western Cape have completed specialised training through Shoprite's Act For Change programme, helping improve the quality of education for 580 young children in Atlantis, Langa and Gugulethu.
Delivered in partnership with The Early Care Foundation, the programme equips practitioners with practical teaching skills, child development knowledge and classroom management techniques to create more engaging learning environments.
The initiative forms part of Shoprite's national support for 148 ECD centres, where more than 10 000 children also receive nutritious meals every day.

DBE launches national toolkit to strengthen reading culture

The Department of Basic Education has launched a national literacy promotion toolkit to help build a stronger reading culture in homes, schools and communities across South Africa.
The initiative forms part of the National Literacy Strategy to 2030 and provides practical guidance on establishing reading clubs, creating print rich learning environments and supporting literacy programmes such as the National Spelling Bee. It also encourages parents, schools, libraries and community organisations to work together to improve children's reading skills.
The Department says the toolkit is designed to help more children become confident readers by making literacy part of everyday life.

NFL Flag Africa Championship showcases the continent's rising talent

History was made in Nairobi as the inaugural NFL Flag Africa Continental Championship brought together the continent's top national flag football teams for the first time.
The tournament featured men's, women's and Under 13 teams from South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Egypt, as the NFL continues to grow the non contact version of American football ahead of its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
South Africa claimed bronze in the men's and Under 13 competitions, while Egypt won the men's title and Nigeria lifted the women's trophy. NFL International Head of Flag Development Afia Law says the inaugural tournament is an important milestone for flag football in Africa
