Soweto organisations support learners ahead of school reopening

Community organisations from Soweto have hosted a two-day back-to-school campaign at Zola Eco Park to help learners from Zola and Emdeni prepare for the new school year.
The initiative was led by Ekujuleni Kwenhliziyo Community Development, together with Voice It in Action and iSabelo Development Solution. Learners received haircuts, braiding and shoe-polishing services.
Founder Khululiwe Mtshali said the campaign focuses on supporting children from vulnerable backgrounds and encouraging confidence as they return to school.
The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa also took part, sharing information on learnerships, online programmes and basic digital skills for unemployed youth.
Organisers say the campaign forms part of ongoing community efforts to support learners and families.

The organisation has mobilised teams and resources to deliver water, food, and essential supplies to affected areas.
Ali Sablay of Gift of the Givers gives credit to local disaster management teams and says Gift of the Givers teams have already reached many of the affected communities.

Pretoria Metro Reports 33% Growth in Informal Economy

The City of Tshwane says Pretoria’s informal economy has grown by 33% over the past year, adding an estimated 57,000 livelihoods following the approval of a new by-law supporting township and informal businesses.
MMC for Economic Development Sarah Mabotsa highlighted the sector’s role in tackling unemployment, restoring economic dignity, and providing income opportunities, particularly for women and youth. The by-law broadens the definition of informal trade to include spaza shops, flea markets, mobile traders, and container-based businesses, while providing infrastructure, training, and regulatory support.
Mabotsa thanked residents for supporting local businesses, saying their participation is helping to build Tshwane’s economy from the ground up.
