Emthonjeni Juvenile Centre in Baviaanspoort, Gauteng, is hoping to achieve 10 consecutive years of a 100 percent matric pass rate as it awaits the 2025 results for correctional services schools.
Principal Kgaume Modiba said he is confident the Class of 2025 will uphold the centre’s record, crediting the dedication of learners and teachers.
The centre focuses on rehabilitation through education and vocational training. Last year, its top student was admitted to the University of the Witwatersrand.
Class representative Tshepo Magagane, serving a 10-year sentence, described completing matric as a turning point and is aiming for seven distinctions.

World Bank Raises South Africa’s 2026 Growth Forecast to 1.4 Percent

The World Bank has raised its economic growth forecast for South Africa to 1.4 percent in 2026, up 0.3 percentage points from its June 2025 projection.
The Bank says the economy strengthened in 2025, growing by about 1.3 percent, supported by more reliable electricity supply, a bumper agricultural harvest, and stronger business confidence toward the end of the year.
It adds that private consumption and investment will remain the main growth drivers, while fiscal consolidation and a lower inflation target have helped boost investor sentiment.

Hero Pilot Saves Homes in Kouga Fires

Riaan Rautenbach is being hailed as a hero in Kouga after helping protect homes during a week of intense fires.
Piloting a R44 million AT-802 firefighting aircraft, he dropped water with precision, saving properties and surrounding areas from the flames.
Over 1.2 million litres of water were released from helicopters and aircraft, covering more than 25,000 hectares.
The Kouga Municipality praised Rautenbach’s bravery and skill, noting the split-second decisions needed to fight the blaze from the air.

Namibia is hosting the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup, marking the country’s first-ever Cricket World Cup. Eight nations are competing, including defending champions Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Afghanistan, the West Indies, Tanzania, and Japan.
Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Dr Sanet Steenkamp, said the tournament goes beyond scores and results, celebrating youth potential, sporting excellence, unity, and international cooperation.
The tournament began yesterday at the Namibia Cricket Ground. Johan Muller, CEO of Cricket Namibia welcomed the teams.
