They serve in a range of roles across the organisation, from frontline rescue work to supporting emergency operations.
Women make up 30% of the NSRI’s 1 566 volunteers and are taking on more operational and leadership roles.
The organisation says their work is helping protect communities and save lives.

Community Unites to Support Children Battling Cancer

An initiative by the Everyday Kindness Charity Foundation has brought businesses, volunteers and a cancer support organisation together to support children living with cancer.
Volunteers worked as waiters at Panarottis Clearwater, which donated 10 percent of the evening’s turnover to Cupcakes of Hope.
The event also raised awareness ahead of National Cupcake Day on September 26.
Cupcakes will be sold at more than 80 shopping malls across South Africa, with funds raised going towards supporting children with cancer.

Digital Programme Connects Rural Schools Nationwide

A digital programme is bringing computer centres and Wi-Fi to rural schools across all nine provinces.
The National Teq ICT Innovation Programme is also introducing ICT learning systems to help learners gain digital skills.
The rollout has created jobs for 1,200 young people across South Africa.
The programme aims to improve access to technology and prepare learners for opportunities in the digital economy.

Springboks Step Up All Blacks Preparations

The Springboks have stepped up preparations for their four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand.
Coach Rassie Erasmus says the squad has recovered well following last week’s 17-10 victory over Argentina.
The travelling squad returned to South Africa on Monday and Tuesday, and spent much of the week recovering before resuming full training on Friday and Saturday.
The series begins at Ellis Park on August 22, followed by Tests in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Baltimore in the US.
Erasmus says the Boks are ready for the challenge and will fine-tune their preparations during the week.
