Wits Researcher Explores New Way To Connect Underserved Communities
Story 2
Wits University electrical engineer Warwick Brown is exploring how free-space optics could help bring internet access to communities that cannot afford fibre infrastructure.
Brown discussed the technology at the Southern Africa Telecommunications Networks and Applications Conference, held at Champagne Sports Resort in KwaZulu Natal from 13 to 15 October 2026.
The conference brings together researchers and industry experts to share ideas and explore advances in telecommunications and digital connectivity.
Free-space optics uses beams of light to transmit data through the air, potentially offering an alternative to laying expensive fibre cables in areas where installation is difficult or unaffordable.

Adventurer Reaches UK After 28 Year Journey Around The World
Teaser / Tailpiece story
British adventurer Karl Bushby has reached UK soil after a 50,000 kilometre journey from South America, undertaken without using planes, trains, boats or other transport.
The 57 year old former paratrooper set off from Chile in November 1998, determined to walk to his mother’s home near Hull in northern England. The challenge was also about testing his limits and proving he could achieve more than he imagined.
Some challenges forced him to pause his journey several times, but he resumed his trek whenever circumstances allowed and has now reached UK soil after swimming across the English Channel from France.
