Johannesburg learner joins Yale scholars programme

Grade 10 learner Tsebo Mofokeng, based in Johannesburg, has been selected for the 2026 Yale Young African Scholars Programme.
She attends UCT Online High School and will join students from across Africa for the programme, hosted by Yale University in the United States.
The programme brings together high school learners selected for academic performance, leadership potential, and community involvement, with thousands of applicants competing for limited places from more than 40 countries.
Tsebo will take part in an intensive academic and leadership development experience alongside peers from 42 countries.

Zakes Bantwini launches empowerment foundation

Grammy Award-winning artist Zakes Bantwini has launched the Zakes Bantwini Foundation.
The foundation, lauched earlier this week, runs programmes supporting women, youth and emerging creatives through mentorship, skills training--- and access to industry opportunities in music, sport, and the arts.
Planned initiatives include EmpowerHER Workshops for women in creative industries, a Youth Talent Incubator under Mayonie Productions, and a Business of Music Summit focused on publishing, marketing, and monetisation.
It will also introduce a Creative Arts Festival, a Sports Leadership Academy, and digital media training programmes for young people.

Franschhoek Literary Festival

The Franschhoek Literary Festival gets underway today in the Cape Winelands, bringing a weekend programme focused on storytelling, discussion and cultural events.
This year’s festival features 121 sessions with local and international authors, alongside workshops and interactive talks for audiences.
It opens with the Rock for Reading fundraiser at Bridge House School, which supports literacy initiatives.
A new children’s programme will also debut, including a “Mother of Books” session led by storyteller Gcina Mhlophe to encourage reading among young audiences.
