South African Prof Tshifularo Advances Breakthrough Hearing Restoration Trials

Pretoria-based ENT surgeon Mashudu Tshifularo is preparing to lead clinical trials aimed at restoring hearing using 3D-printed titanium middle-ear bones.
The trials at Steve Biko Academic Hospital will involve 45 patients and build on his 2019 breakthrough, when he performed the world’s first middle-ear transplant using 3D-printed ossicles.
The procedure replaces damaged ear bones with biocompatible titanium implants using robotic surgery, offering a minimally invasive treatment for hearing loss.
Tshifularo says the project reflects years of research and collaboration aimed at improving hearing restoration technology.

Dawn Zuidgeest-Craft decided to return to her medical ambitions after she and her husband reviewed their bucket list following his brain hemorrhage.
She funded her studies using retirement savings and completed clinical training in the United States before graduating shortly before her 73rd birthday.
She will begin her residency in Michigan.
