South African Prof Tshifularo Advances Breakthrough Hearing Restoration Trials
Story 1
Pretoria-based ENT surgeon Mashudu Tshifularo is preparing to lead clinical trials aimed at restoring hearing using 3D-printed titanium middle-ear bones.
The trials at Steve Biko Academic Hospital will involve 45 patients and build on his 2019 breakthrough, when he performed the world’s first middle-ear transplant using 3D-printed ossicles.
The procedure replaces damaged ear bones with biocompatible titanium implants using robotic surgery, offering a minimally invasive treatment for hearing loss.
Tshifularo says the project reflects years of research and collaboration aimed at improving hearing restoration technology.
