Joburg's Smart City Office, in collaboration with Wits University, is reminding residents, students, small business owners, and City employees to submit bold ideas for the 2025 Smart City Innovation Challenge. Launched in 2020, the initiative tackles issues like traffic, waste, housing, and digital access. Selected ideas receive funding, mentorship, and pilot opportunities. Project manager Nelson Sekgota says the programme is a movement that empower people to shape their city. Past innovations include township recycling apps and smart lighting for informal settlements.

Local artists have partnered with tour guides to create the Soweto Art Route, a vibrant journey through the township’s creative heart. Starting at Lebo’s Backpackers in Orlando West, the tour blends storytelling and art, with stops at galleries, murals, and studios. Highlights include the quirky “elephant houses,” Lerato Motau’s textile art studio, and the Matchbox Gallery. Led by guides like Thabo “the Tourist” Modise, the experience showcases Soweto’s rich history, talent, and cultural pride in unforgettable ways.

President Cyril Ramaphosa congratulated the Proteas on winning the ICC Test Championship against Australia by five wickets at Lord’s.
