Bamboo Restores Ash‑Choked Farmland in Maharashtra
Story 3
In the Indian state of Maharashtra, bamboo-a fast growing grass that looks like a tree- is being used to heal land covered in harmful ash from coal power plants.
Dr. Lal Singh has spent 12 years developing a simple way to clean the soil using bamboo, which can absorb harmful silica from the air and ground.
This method has helped bring back 24 acres of farms in villages like Ubagi and Khapari, where ash had made farming very hard.
The process includes removing extra ash, improving the soil with helpful microbes, and planting the right types of bamboo for each area.
Now, the project is expanding to other parts of India to protect water and restore more damaged land.
