World’s largest medieval cog uncovered off Copenhagen
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Maritime archaeologists in Denmark have uncovered the world’s largest medieval cargo ship, a cog named Svælget 2, buried for over 600 years in the Oresund Strait.
The ship measures about 30 metres long, 7.6 metres wide, and 5.5 metres high, with an estimated cargo capacity of 300 tons.
Its well-preserved timbers, rigging, and brick-built galley offer new insight into Middle Ages shipbuilding and trade.
Experts say Svælget 2 shows how cogs could carry massive cargoes with small crews, and the vessel’s size reflects the scale of medieval trade in Northern Europe.
Archaeologists also highlight daily life on board, including a covered platform for shelter and a fireproof cooking area.
