Festival of Lights hosts indigenous drumming workshop at Joburg Zoo

The Festival of Lights is underway at the Johannesburg Zoo and runs until the 4th of January 2026.
Along with its illuminated displays, the festival is offering weekly live performances as part of its programme.
African indigenous music artist and drumming teacher Esther Maumela will feature on Wednesday the 17th of December.
Maumela is known for using drumming to support healing, identity and self expression, with a focus on indigenous African instruments.
Her workshop will be open to both children and adults attending the festival on the night.

SPAR backs turtle hatchling rehabilitation programme

Twelve rescued loggerhead turtle hatchlings are recovering through the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Adopt a Turtle Hatchling programme, with support from SPAR retailers in the Western Cape and Namibia.
The hatchlings were found stranded along the coastline, where young turtles often wash ashore cold, injured or exhausted.
Funding from the adoption programme covers daily care and specialised rehabilitation at the Turtle Conservation Centre.
The initiative also tracks each turtle’s progress from rescue through to eventual release back into the ocean.
