First 3D-printed cornea restores patient’s sight
Story 3
A patient has regained their vision following the world’s first successful implant of a 3D-printed cornea made entirely from human cells grown in a laboratory. The procedure was performed in Israel by doctors using an implant developed by North Carolina-based Precise Bio.
The cornea, called PB-001, is designed to match the clarity and function of a natural cornea and can integrate with the patient’s own tissue.
The technology could turn a single donated cornea into hundreds of lab-grown grafts, offering a solution to the global shortage of donor tissue.
Doctors say the breakthrough is a major milestone in regenerative eye medicine and brings hope to millions living with corneal blindness.
