Botswana Trials Drought Resistant Rice To Improve Food Security
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Chinese and Botswanan agricultural experts are working together to introduce drought resistant, water saving rice varieties to Botswana, helping the country strengthen local food production despite limited water supplies.
Initial trials have produced yields of at least 3.5 tonnes per hectare. The project plans to expand seed distribution and support local farmers in growing rice varieties suited to Botswana’s climate.
The cooperation builds on earlier trials in the country, where drought resistant rice was successfully harvested in 2022.
University of Botswana Associate Professor Utlwang Batlang says the initiative will help make the country more food secure.
