UJ women shine in Mail & Guardian’s Power of Women list

The University of Johannesburg has strengthened its reputation for excellence, with six of its leading academics featured in the Mail & Guardian’s 2025 Power of Women list.
Now in its 20th year, the list celebrates 100 women advancing science, governance, education, health, law and the arts.
UJ’s honourees are Dr Khanya Mthethwa, Professor Kulsum Kondiah, Professor Heidi Abrahamse, Natasha Rene Naidoo, Professor Danielle Nel-Sanders and Professor Stella Bvuma.
Their recognition highlights UJ’s commitment to excellence, empowerment and shaping the future through innovation and inclusive leadership.

St Marks International to Fund Bursaries After Kay Motsepe Football Win

St Marks International School from Mpumalanga has pledged to use its R3 million prize from the Kay Motsepe Schools Football Championship U-19 boys tournament to provide bursaries for deserving children. The school beat Fumana from Gauteng 1-0 in the final at Giant Stadium in Soshanguve.
The Kay Motsepe Championship is one of South Africa’s top school football tournaments, offering over R11 million in prizes. Other winners included Queenswood in the U-13 boys category and St Anne’s in the U-13 girls final.
Deputy director Bongani Zondi said the education departments, along with the Motsepe Foundation and Sanlam, will monitor how schools use the prize money, whether for bursaries, transport, or academic resources like libraries.

Bystanders lift crashed helicopter to save trapped medical crew in Sacramento

Quick-thinking citizens in Sacramento, California, helped save lives when a REACH Air Medical Services helicopter crashed on Highway 50.
The pilot, a paramedic, and a nurse were trapped, but more than a dozen bystanders worked together to lift the helicopter and free at least one crew member.
The crash caused no fire thanks to the aircraft’s safety features, and first responders arrived shortly after.
The brave actions of these local citizens likely prevented further injuries.
