California passes law giving users more control over online data
Story 3
California has approved the Opt Me Out Act, a new law requiring web browsers to offer a clearly signposted option for users to prevent websites from selling or sharing their personal information.
The law will come into effect in 2027 and replaces older rules that were often complicated and hard for users to navigate.
Instead of visiting individual websites to change settings, consumers will be able to set their preference once in their browser.
The legislation also provides a framework that other states and countries could adopt to give people more control over their online data. Privacy groups say the law is expected to simplify online data management for millions of users.
