Fourteen year old Kaytlin Visser from Boksburg has secured her place at the MMA World Championships in Abu Dhabi after winning back to back South African youth titles.
The young fighter earned selection after claiming gold at the 2026 South African Youth Championships and will compete against top international athletes from 17 to 23 August.
Beyond competing, she also helps coach young Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students, while her family now looks for sponsorship support to cover travel and competition costs.

Blanket Drive Raises R25,000 for Children in Need Within 24 Hours

South Africans have raised 25 thousand rand in less than 24 hours to support a blanket drive for children affected by severe winter weather conditions.
The campaign was launched by The Angel Network, which asked for donations of 80 rand per blanket to help provide warmth and comfort to vulnerable children during the recent storms.
Founder Glynne Wolman says the response grew rapidly after a WhatsApp appeal was widely shared, while women involved in the organisation’s sewing skills programme also contributed by making blankets for the initiative.

Riverside Woman Builds Business Through Plastic Bag Knitting

A Riverside woman has spent the past 14 years turning discarded plastic bags into handmade knitted products, creating a source of income through an unusual skill she learned after moving to Diepsloot in 2012.
Forty four year old Gugu Nkosi was taught to knit by her late grandmother and later adapted the technique by using plastic bags instead of wool. Her work gained attention after a passer by offered to market her products, leading to multiple orders and the start of her small business.
Nkosi now collects and prepares plastic bags by cutting them into thin strips before knitting carpets and other items by hand.

The Mpumalanga Education Department is launching its Rhandza Xikolo Xa Wena Campaign at Mahushu Agricultural School aimed at encouraging communities to take greater ownership of local schools to help improve learning outcomes.
The initiative, which means Love Your School, will also bring together businesses, community members and other stakeholders to help repair damaged infrastructure and keep schools clean and well maintained.
Officials say the campaign is focused on creating safer and more supportive learning environments for pupils across the province.
