Riverside Woman Builds Business Through Plastic Bag Knitting
Story 1
A Riverside woman has spent the past 14 years turning discarded plastic bags into handmade knitted products, creating a source of income through an unusual skill she learned after moving to Diepsloot in 2012.
Forty four year old Gugu Nkosi was taught to knit by her late grandmother and later adapted the technique by using plastic bags instead of wool. Her work gained attention after a passer by offered to market her products, leading to multiple orders and the start of her small business.
Nkosi now collects and prepares plastic bags by cutting them into thin strips before knitting carpets and other items by hand.
