Student develops toy car testing maths skills
Story 1
A Stellenbosch University mechatronic engineering student, Camryn Abrahamson, has built a toy car that tests children’s basic maths skills using speech interaction.
The device asks numeracy questions, listens to children’s spoken answers, and responds using a small onboard computer and display system.
The prototype was developed to explore early identification of maths learning gaps in children, using accessible and affordable technology.
The system achieved about 79% accuracy in English and 77% in Afrikaans child speech, outperforming existing tools tested by the university.
