Two SA students win prestigious Rhodes scholarships

Wits University graduates Coral Pillay and Kabelo Mbuyisa-Seonyane have been selected as Rhodes Scholars and will head to Oxford University in October 2026.
Pillay will continue her work in astrophysics, studying galaxies, black holes and how the universe evolves.
Mbuyisa-Seonyane will pursue International Development, focusing on decolonial education, African development and the green transition.
Both graduates earned the scholarship through consistent academic performance and leadership in their fields, placing them among this year’s Southern Africa Rhodes Scholarship recipients.

SA duo reclaims drone speed record

South African father-and-son, Luke and Mike Bell, have reclaimed the Guinness World Record for the world’s fastest drone, for the third time in 2-years.
Their Peregreen V4 reached 657 km/h in December, beating the previous record held by an Australian engineer.
The duo spent over two years building, testing and adjusting drones to push the limits of speed.
Luke says they have been working hard on improving their drone for months.
