Western Cape Learners Win Global Space Competition
Story 1
Seven Western Cape high school learners have won an international space engineering competition at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States.
The learners competed in South Africa’s first entry, joining students from around the world to design and defend a spacecraft for 3,000 people.
South African learner Joseph Allderman also won the Anita Gale Creative Genius Prize.
The victory is expected to boost opportunities for young South Africans in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Sanofi, UNICEF Target Eastern Cape Vaccine Gaps

Sanofi and UNICEF are launching a programme to close childhood vaccination gaps in three Eastern Cape districts.
The initiative will target children in OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Amathole who have missed routine vaccines or have not started their vaccinations.
South Africa’s first-dose DTP coverage fell from 87% in 2019 to 67% in 2025, leaving about one in three infants without their first dose.
The programme will run until March 2027, with health teams working in communities to find missed children and strengthen local vaccination services.

South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-1 in their CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations playoff match in Morocco to qualify for the FIFA Playoff tournament for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
Goals from Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane secured the victory for Banyana Banyana.
The next phase of the qualification process will be played in November and will feature two teams from Africa, South Africa and Ghana, two from Asia, and one each from Oceania and South America.
The top two teams will advance to March’s final play-off round.
