Rescue Organisation Alley Cat Rescue Reaches Major Milestone
Story 2
Rescue organisation Alley Cat Rescue has sterilised more than 6 000 domestic cats in communities bordering the Kruger National Park as part of a conservation programme aimed at protecting African wildcats.
The teams, made up of vets and animal handlers, travel to rural settlements to run mobile clinics focused on spaying domestic cats and reducing interbreeding with wildcats.
The organisation says the work is helping to limit hybridisation, which threatens the survival of the African wildcat’s genetic line. Since 2018, the programme has expanded across six provinces and has now sterilised more than 15 000 cats nationwide.
