University of Pretoria celebrates global unity on International Students Day

The University of Pretoria recently marked International Students Day with a vibrant celebration of its cultural diversity.

Students from over 100 countries showcased traditional attire, performances, and poetry, with top honours going to Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and IsiXhosa groups.
The event highlighted UP’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community where diversity is celebrated and students are inspired to become socially responsible global leaders.

92-year-old matriarch fights to keep N|uu language alive

In the Green Kalahari in the Northern Cape, 92-year-old Katrina Esau, the last first-language speaker of the ancient N|uu language, is on a mission to preserve her mother tongue.
She teaches her great-grandchildren and works with her granddaughter, Claudia Snyman, through a school, a children’s book, a dictionary, and a language app.
Once suppressed under colonial rule, N|uu is part of the Tuu language family and is now critically endangered. Esau, honoured as a “living human treasure” and recipient of an honorary doctorate from UCT, hopes government support will help sustain the language for future generation.
