South African endurance runner Julian Karp will make history at the Soweto Marathon on Saturday, 29 November, running his 1,000th official marathon.
Karp began his marathon journey in 1990 and has since completed only officially sanctioned road marathons and ultras, making his record fully verified.
He chose the Soweto Marathon for this milestone, having run the first official race in 1993 and completed 18 more since. The event is known as The People’s Race, symbolising resilience and unity in South Africa.
At 65, Karp continues to inspire the running community, proving dedication and perseverance can turn a personal passion into a historic achievement.

National Treasury says it has saved R6.7 billion through its targeted and responsible savings initiative introduced earlier this year.
The TARS initiative identified underperforming or duplicate government programmes to be cut, phased out, or reviewed to reduce wasteful spending.
It also uncovered more than 8,000 ghost workers receiving multiple salaries from different departments.
Treasury says the savings will be redirected to key priorities like infrastructure while protecting essential public services.

Eight-year-old Luke Grahame from Colorado is raising funds for children who cannot afford to play hockey through his merchandise brand, Rink Dude.
The initiative donates proceeds to charities that cover equipment, rink time, and team fees. Luke is currently running a fundraiser for the children of veterans, with contributions going to the United Heroes League.
Luke’s family has a strong hockey background, including his father John Grahame, a former NHL goalie, and other relatives involved in professional hockey.
His mother says the project allows Luke to support other children while pursuing his own passion for the sport.
