WESSA opens nominations for 100 Conservation Leadership Awards

South Africans can nominate individuals and organisations for the WESSA100 Conservation Leadership Awards, run by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa.
The awards mark WESSA’s 100th year and will recognise 100 people and groups working in environmental conservation across the country.
Categories include youth leaders, educators, community groups, companies, and environmental workers, with nominations submitted online via the WESSA website.
Nominations close on 31 July 2026, and winners will be announced at WESSA’s annual general meeting in October 2026.

Of Soul and Joy trains young photographers in Thokoza

The Of Soul and Joy programme in Thokoza, Johannesburg, is training young photographers through mentorship, workshops and professional development in documentary photography.
The initiative, founded in 2012, supports participants aged 13 to 30 with skills training, scholarships and access to creative industry networks.
Several alumni have gone on to international careers, including photographers working with Magnum Photos and award finalists at global exhibitions.
The programme continues to place young photographers in communities where they document local stories and build careers in the creative sector.

Cape Town and Manjiya host sanitation workshops

The City of Cape Town and Manjiya Economic Development are running sanitation and water conservation workshops in Kraaifontein and Scottsville.
The programme forms part of the City’s Water and Sanitation grant initiative, which supports 22 community organisations.
Manjiya Economic Development has hosted eight workshops teaching residents how waste disposal affects sewer systems, waterways and public infrastructure.
More than 900 residents, including learners and young adults, have taken part.
The sessions focus on preventing pollution and helping residents report sanitation problems to the City.
