Songlines Help Elders Preserve and Teach Indigenous Knowledge in Australia
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Warlpiri elders in Australia are using traditional songlines to help teach younger generations how to care for the land and preserve cultural knowledge.
The system connects stories, songs and tracking skills that explain how animals move, how ecosystems work and how people should look after the environment.
A new digital storybook project called Reading the Country has been developed to bring this knowledge into classrooms and make it easier for young people growing up away from the desert to learn their culture.
The initiative is also helping support conservation efforts by linking traditional knowledge with modern environmental education.
