Invasive Species Removed to Restore Critical South African Ecosystems
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A coordinated series of conservation projects has cleared invasive alien species from around 13,000 acres of native habitat across South Africa between 2017 and 2025.
The work, led by groups under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, focused on removing invasive plants and fish while restoring damaged ecosystems.
In the Western Cape, the clearing of invasive pine, eucalyptus and acacia trees has helped restore wetlands and fynbos habitats supporting endangered species including the rough moss frog and western leopard toad.
Conservation efforts in freshwater systems have also helped boost populations of the critically endangered Clanwilliam sandfish.
