Hawaiʻi Project Removes Nearly 200,000 Pounds of Ocean Debris
Teaser / Tailpiece story
In just over three years, Hawaiʻi Pacific University’s Bounty Project has removed more than 185,000 pounds of derelict fishing gear from the North Pacific Ocean.
The initiative turns commercial fishing trips into ocean cleanup opportunities, with fishermen compensated to recover nets, lines, and floats before they drift into reefs or threaten wildlife.
Seventy-seven fishermen have conducted over 690 recoveries, with materials either recycled, repurposed, or responsibly disposed of.
The project also monitors sensitive reef areas, allowing rapid response to gear that could harm corals and endangered species.
Supported by NOAA and the Ocean Conservancy, the programme helps fishermen diversify their income while protecting the ocean environment.
