NYDA launches new youth service programme

The National Youth Development Agency has launched the 5th Phase on the National Youth Service Programme at the NYDA Head Office in Sunninghill in Johannesburg.

The programme unlocks 100,000 paid service opportunities for unemployed South African youth.

Unemployed youth will receive a monthly stipend, practical work experience, and accredited skill development.

The programme is open to young citizens between 18 and 35 years old.

Six outstanding teachers honoured for excellence in education

Six exceptional teachers have been honoured by the FirstRand Foundation's National Teaching Excellence Awards that were held in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education in Sandton last week.

The awards celebrate excellence in literacy, numeracy, innovation and digital learning.

The teachers will be embarking on a project-based international study tour to Denmark to benchmark educational systems, engage in global best practices, and bring innovative teaching methods back to South Africa.

The award-winning educators are among a select group in a sector of more than 400 000 teachers nationwide.

The city of Cape Town has been ranked the 11th-best city in the world for food in Time Out's 2026 ranking.
The Mother City is celebrated for its homegrown flavours, with the Cape Malay curry receiving a special mention.

The city was ranked alongside global giants including Bangkok, Mexico City, London, and Barcelona.
The annual ranking is based on a global survey of residents and evaluated by Time Out's international network of food experts and measures food quality, affordability, innovation, diversity and local dining culture in cities across the world.

Katlehong Karate stars to represent SA in Japan

A group of 24 young athletes from Katlehong in Ekurhuleni has qualified for the prestigious International Juniors' Karate Dream Festival that will be taking place in Tokyo in Japan next month.

The event will host over 5000 participants from across the world, ranging in ages from four to 85 years old.

The squad includes hearing-impaired athletes from the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, who will compete against hearing opponents in a vocal sport.

The team is currently running a fundraising campaign to cover flight tickets, accommodation and travel gear to get to Japan.

Supporters can contribute through the Back-A-Buddy crowd funding platform.
