Katlehong Karate stars to represent SA in Japan

A group of 24 young athletes from Katlehong in Ekurhuleni has qualified for the prestigious International Juniors' Karate Dream Festival that will be taking place in Tokyo in Japan next month.

The event will host over 5000 participants from across the world, ranging in ages from four to 85 years old.

The squad includes hearing-impaired athletes from the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, who will compete against hearing opponents in a vocal sport.

The team is currently running a fundraising campaign to cover flight tickets, accommodation and travel gear to get to Japan.

Supporters can contribute through the Back-A-Buddy crowd funding platform.

Teen Innovator develops AI glasses to empower the visually Impaired

A Sixteen-year-old South African innovator from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape has founded the Spectacles4TheBlind SA startup to develop AI-powered smart glasses to help visually impaired people to independently navigate their surroundings.

Elihle Stali began building the concept in 2023 as a Computer Science student at the Nelson Mandela University.

The innovation features conversational AI that interacts with users in multiple South African languages.

The concept has earned him a place among the world's top 150 startups at the LEAP Startup Competition, with an invitation to showcase the technology in Hong Kong in July.

A squad of 20 former Bafana Bafana players has travelled to Mexico as part of an international reunion initiative led by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

The South African legends took on their Mexico 2010 counterparts in a commemorative exhibition match,
reigniting memories of the iconic historic opening fixture of the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was hosted in South Africa.

The rematch formed part of celebrations that surround the 2026 FIFA World Cup and provided fans and former players with an opportunity to relive one of the most memorable moments in World Cup history.

SA celebrates World Marathon Major status

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has been confirmed as the first Abbott World Marathon Major to be held on African soil.

This follows the successful staging of its 2026 race on the 24th of May, where the event passed the second and final stage of its Abbott World Marathon Majors assessment, becoming the eighth member of the most prestigious series in marathon running globally.

The inclusion fills a massive geographic gap in global running, allowing athletes on the African continent to complete a World Marathon Major on home soil.

The race joins seven of the sport’s most celebrated marathons including Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York.
