Katlehong Karate stars to represent SA in Japan

A group of 24 young athletes from Katlehong in Ekurhuleni has qualified for the prestigious International Juniors' Karate Dream Festival that will be taking place in Tokyo in Japan next month.

The event will host over 5000 participants from across the world, ranging in ages from four to 85 years old.

The squad includes hearing-impaired athletes from the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, who will compete against hearing opponents in a vocal sport.

The team is currently running a fundraising campaign to cover flight tickets, accommodation and travel gear to get to Japan.
Supporters can contribute through the Back-A-Buddy crowd funding platform.

The city of Cape Town has been ranked the 11th-best city in the world for food in Time Out's 2026 ranking.
The Mother City is celebrated for its homegrown flavours, with the Cape Malay curry receiving a special mention.

The annual ranking is based on a global survey of residents and evaluated by Time Out's international network of food experts and measures food quality, affordability, innovation, diversity and local dining culture in cities across the world.

School of Skills Learnership empowers young construction trainees

The Western Cape's provincial government has welcomed the launch of the School of Skills Learnership Programme.

The programme will provide accredited construction training to 90 School of Skills graduates over a 12-month period in communities including Gugulethu, Retreat, Milnerton and Bellville.

Provincial officials say the initiative reflects a commitment to empowering disadvantaged youth by creating opportunities for skills development, economic participation and pathways into meaningful employment.

SA celebrates World Marathon Major status

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has been confirmed as the first Abbott World Marathon Major to be held on African soil.

This follows the successful staging of its 2026 race on the 24th of May, where the event passed the second and final stage of its Abbott World Marathon Majors assessment, becoming the eighth member of the most prestigious series in marathon running globally.

The inclusion fills a massive geographic gap in global running, allowing athletes on the African continent to complete a World Marathon Major on home soil.

The race joins seven of the sport’s most celebrated marathons including Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York.
