Six outstanding teachers honoured for excellence in education

Six exceptional teachers have been honoured by the FirstRand Foundation's National Teaching Excellence Awards that were held in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education in Sandton last week.

The awards celebrate excellence in literacy, numeracy, innovation and digital learning.

The teachers will be embarking on a project-based international study tour to Denmark to benchmark educational systems, engage in global best practices, and bring innovative teaching methods back to South Africa.

The award-winning educators are among a select group in a sector of more than 400 000 teachers nationwide.

UCT secures long-term renewable electricity supply

The University of Cape Town has signed a long-term renewable electricity supply agreement with Discovery Green.

The partnership will see the majority of electricity used at UCT's main and health sciences campuses sourced from renewable energy from 2027 for nearly a decade. The initiative is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by more than 33 000 tonnes while supporting research opportunities, skills development programmes and student scholarships.

The agreement represents a significant investment in both environmental stewardship and educational advancement.

Burgersfort Doctor uses kota business proceeds to fund life-saving surgeries

A doctor from Burgersfort in Limpopo is using proceeds from his kota business to help patients who cannot afford life-changing medical procedures.

Dr Ephraim Kgoete launched the initiative after witnessing long waiting lists and treatment delays in the public healthcare system.

The doctor assists patients by funding free or subsidised surgeries and other medical care, through the programme.

The initiative has helped seven patients access surgery since last year.
Kgoete hopes to expand the project through partnerships, sponsorships and government support, enabling more vulnerable patients to receive the healthcare they need.

Global Aerospace and defence leaders to gather in Pretoria

South Africa will host the 13th biennial Africa Aerospace and Defence trade exhibition and airshow at the Air Force Base in Waterkloof in Pretoria this September.

Exhibition director Nakedi Phasha says organisers are aiming to attract more than 300 exhibitors from over 40 countries.

More than 200 official delegations have been invited, with a target of securing 100 confirmed delegations from around the world.

The event is expected to draw significant interest, with an estimated 60 000 visitors anticipated between the 16th and the 20th of September.
