Hockey kit donation gives young Gauteng players a boost

Young hockey players in Gauteng are set to benefit after more than 18 boxes of donated sports equipment arrived from England.
The donation from members of the Sevenoaks Hockey Club in Kent was received by Johannesburg based charity Play It Forward after months of delays, with most of the kit going to the Soweto based Pandas Hockey Club for distribution to development clubs across southern Gauteng.
Some of the clothing has also been donated to local charities, extending the impact of the generous contribution to even more young people.

Young KZN filmmaker earns global recognition

A 23 year old filmmaker from Hammarsdale is set to represent South Africa at the Indie Film Awards in New York after his short film Orì was selected for the international festival from 4 to 6 August.
Sabelo Khomo wrote, directed and edited the award winning film, which explores themes of African spirituality and healing and was created during the Durban 48 Hour Film Project.
The Durban University of Technology graduate has also built a growing reputation as a cinematographer, with his work earning recognition at both local and international film festivals. Sabelo says this is a big moment for him

Learners from five Bedfordview schools have helped transform the Children's Fun Corner at Bedfordview Library with colourful murals that celebrate reading and creativity.
The refreshed space also includes new seating and restored furniture, creating a brighter and more welcoming environment where children can enjoy books and learning.
The project, supported by Eastgate Shopping Centre, continues to encourage families to visit the library and nurture a lifelong love of reading.

A 16 year old girl from Florida has created a programme to teach students how to stay safe during hurricanes after realising many schools did not cover the topic.
Elise Raurell developed Storm Smart to help young people learn practical safety skills, including how to prepare emergency kits and respond during severe weather.
More than 500 students have already taken part, with many going on to teach the lessons to their classmates, creating a growing network of young leaders.
