South Africa’s first Braille beach signage unveiled at Blaauwberg
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Blaauwberg Nature Reserve now has South Africa’s first Braille coastal education signs, giving blind and partially sighted visitors information on dunes, seabirds, marine life, and local history.
The project was led by WESSA in partnership with Blind SA, the City of Cape Town, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, with support from Nedbank and the Ford Wildlife Foundation.
The signs are designed to withstand coastal conditions for at least five years, and production involved trained blind South African workers. Plans are underway to expand the signage to other Green Coast and Blue Flag beaches.
